       At some time in your life, smoking tobacco has fulfilled a purpose...

      People usually start smoking in their teens, sometimes simply because of peer pressure. It often surprises people how quickly the years then pass. It's common for clients to disbelieve the simple maths of how long they've been smoking. Especially after I explain that the most serious kind of health problems can start after 20 years...
       Within ten years, most smokers will have noticed health problems as a direct result of their habit. Most will have tried to become a non-smoker at least once...
      Aside from the fact that the toxic substance, nicotine, is highly addictive, there are lots of reasons why people continue to smoke - and why the tobacco industry is still growing (with a turnover of billions!).     
      Although nicotine is very addictive, the actual physical withdrawal is very slight. It is the psychological withdrawal from the act of smoking that people who try to stop using will-power alone have trouble dealing with. (And this is also why all those nicotine replacement therapies don't work for many people).

      As is the case with most of our habits, the need to continue smoking when we would prefer not to is rooted in the subconscious mind.
      While cigarettes become a social prop for some, a dysfunctional form of self-medication for others, smoking itself can become deeply interwoven with the fundamental act of breathing.
      For lots of reasons, it can be quite difficult to get the subconscious to let go of even simple habits by ourselves. Without expert help, even the most strong-willed are likely to be left feeling unsatisfied or incomplete without a cigarette when they have repeatedly imprinted upon the subconscious the simple message that they need to smoke in order to carry on living...
